Gregory, you'll have to wait for the null-cable (or make one yourself). You
must make sure that the Soekris BIOS settings are correct to boot from the
CF. See the soekris documentation. Indeed there is some issue with certain
CF cards not being recognized. I run my 4801 also from CF but cannot recall
which brand I have.

Onderwerp: [Soekris] Net-4801 and m0n0wall Setup

Hi everyone,

I just bought and received a net-4801. My plan is to install m0n0wall on a
compact flash card using my other PC (with compact flash integrated
reader/writer). I downloaded the image on m0n0wall's website
(http://m0n0.ch/wall/download.php?file=net48xx-1.236.img) and used my CentOS
5.4 PC to write on my compact flash card using command: gunzip -c
net48xx-1.236.img | dd of=/dev/sdb1 bs=16k, as described in the m0n0wall
quick start guide. This is supposed to install m0n0wall, which is supposed
to provide a DHCP server on the Soekris net-4801 LAN port, supposed to be
just next to the serial DB-9 port on the board. I plug a wire between LAN
port of my net-4801, and a switch, on which my CentOS computer is plugged
in. I don't get any DHCP lease.

My question is: if you know about m0n0wall setup, have I done something
wrong? Do I need to plug my Internet wire in WAN port for initial setup (I
supposed it wasn't needed). I heard there could be some issue about
compatibility with some types of Compact Flash cards. I used a Kingston 4GB
Type I for my first attempt, and next a Sandisk Extreme III 4GB. I also
tried to install m0n0wall on the CF using the Windows way with the small
utility provided by m0n0wall (http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php) just in
case my card reader/writer would be the problem, or the Linux command
provided by m0n0wall. I was wondering if someone could give me a hint, I'm
waiting for my null modem cable order to test the serial connection (but
still, I'd be glad to make it start before the cable arrives). Is my Soekris
device defect?

I'm sorry if there were mistakes in this message, my mother tongue is
French.

Best regards,

Gregory A. Lussier
