I stopped using pfSense on my Soekris systems when their memory
requirements grew past what my poor little 4501's could do. That
said, they've kept with their m0n0wall roots and continue to provide
very reasonable embedded images that are heavily used. My 4501s were
migrated from a firewall/router role to AP or terminal server roles
using OpenWRT.

Either, depending on your needs. The CF installs generally follow the
embedded line, which in pfSense aren't able to install additional
packages without a good deal of fiddling.

Further discussion should probably migrate offline or to the
pfsense-discussion list.
