I don't think Debian imposes any limit on disk sizes that are within the
limits of current technology. AFAIK, the size limit of ext3 is in the
multiple terabytes, and the limit of the SCSI driver (which is used by SATA)
is way over that.
I tested it on 160GB, which ran just fine. What do your I/O errors look
like?
