this can't be overstated. i had similar problems and was using a cable
that was marked ``null modem cable''---by the manufacturer, not
hand-written letters.

until i traced out the pins with the continuity tester on my VOM (too
cheap for a breakout box) and i found that it was not in fact a
null-modem cable.
