[Soekris] Media test failure even with cable connected

I recently bought a new 5501 on which I planned to install Ubuntu Server
8.04. The installer doesn't detect any network interface however (booting
from CF). The startup log shows the following messages:
[ 30.074406] via-rhine.c:v1.10-LK1.4.3 2007-03-06 Written by Donald Becker
[ 30.093409] Invalid MAC address
[ 30.147743] via-rhine: probe of 0000:00:06.0 failed with error -5
[ 30.165325] Invalid MAC address
[ 30.265677] via-rhine: probe of 0000:00:07.0 failed with error -5
[ 30.299033] Invalid MAC address
[ 30.329179] via-rhine: probe of 0000:00:08.0 failed with error -5
[ 30.356082] Invalid MAC address
[ 30.376229] via-rhine: probe of 0000:00:09.0 failed with error -5
This may very well an ubuntu or driver specific problem, but what makes me
suspicious is that when I let my 5501 try to boot from the network I get the
following error:
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997,1998,1999 Intel Corporation
VIA Rhine III Management Adapter v2.43 (2005/12/15)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
Although I haven't any network boot server running, I definitly have a cable
attached (and a running DHCP server). I tried with different cables
connected to different ethernet switches but all with the same result.
The led of the connected adapter goes of after boot and when I disconnect
the cable later on the led goes back on. All other ethernet leds are on.
So before I go on with trying to install any software I want to clearify
that this error is expected even when a cable is attached. Maybe someone can
help me with this?
Bert.
