Thanks Mike.  Always nice to have a hunch confirmed.

I flashed to 1.32i (not without it's own fun), and 6.3R came up
successfully.  There were lots of messages about missing bits from the
boot scripts, which I'm not sure were there with 6.2, but that's an issue
for the FreeBSD lists.
