First off, the motor in the disk is not your only worry, the
head/voice-coil throws significant magnetic fields around as well.

A simple test with the SATA disk over the mini-PCI or away from it
should be able to tell you if that is indeed the path of trouble.

Other potential causes:

Power supply noise when the disk operates.

Radiated noise from cables (Wrapping in alu-foil may make it worse
if you cannot get good grounding for the foil)
