If you just want to get IP connectivity, consider a USB dongle.
A number of them emulate a serial COM port on USB, and you just
ATDT*99# and then talk PPP to the thing.
While not an internal module, it's relatively quick to set up.
Do note that these modules generate and receive RF, so keep
cables etc away from them, and preferrably, keen them some distance
away from your other gear and other radio equipment.
A number of manufacturers (Draytek) offer gateway/router/NAT boxes
that take UMTS-on-USB-dongle as upstream instead of cable modem/ADSL box.
If you just want mobile connectivity, this may be the way to go.
