Hi folks,

I would like to wrap this thread up: I believe I have it working now.
At least it hasn't failed on me yet when I (re)boot the animal.

I tried Lilo in addition to GRUB, but it still failed. It started
being reliable when I changed the network configuration from DHCP to
static IP and it stayed stable when I went back to GRUB. The root
cause may have been that the NIC did not always come up reliably using
DHCP.
