[Soekris] help getting a 4501 going

I've got a 4501 that I can't seem to get going.  I have nothing on it but would like at least to be able to verify the bios before I try to put something on it.  Right now, when I power the unit up, the green power led goes on and the red error led.  After 20 seconds, the error led goes off.  So it is doing something.  When I try to attach a null modem cable at 19200,8,1,none to HyperTerminal, I get a bunch of giberish, but only the first time I power up.  I have tried at other speeds (38600, 9600), but I get similar results.  Anyone have any suggestions?
