Another good possibility is a baud rate mismatch.  getty starting at 9600
while your terminal emulation s/w is running at the Soekris default 19200.

You can either change the default to 9600 in the comBIOS.  Or on the
system where you created the CF card, edit the target /etc/ttys file so
getty starts at 19200 on the console.  Or simply change your terminal
emulation after it boots.
