Only now I realize that you've initialized the PC87366 to use its 
internal pull up resistors. Effectively this is equal external resistors 
of course.

The PC87366 datasheet describes the internal resistors as "weak pull 
up". This rather vague statement suggests to me that the pnp setup may 
work with the internal resistors configured, but you may have to experiment.
Personally I would choose to initialize the PC87366 not to use the 
internal pull ups with the pnp circuitry.
