[Soekris] Debian on Soekris GRUB Error 16...

Earlier this week I got the Grub error 16, and suspected that it was due
to using Kingston CF.
So I tried SanDisk CF and got the same thing.
I then tried the Kingston CF card on a net4801-60 from an earlier order
and lo! it worked. 
The same CF card worked in one net4801-60 and not the other. Same result
for the SanDisk CF.
The 4801 isn't faulty - Lilo works. It's just somehow different. Both
4801 units have ComBios 1.29

So is this a problem with Grub? 

Also, the Kingston CF was detected as /dev/hdb whereas the SanDisk CF is
detected as /dev/had. 
Anyone know why that would be?
