as the boot loader isn't an issue here, it must be minicom that can't handle 
38400, which is one of the reasons why I don't use it. Here's my cmdline for 
calling up my net4801:

cu -l /dev/tty00 -s 19200

This is the OpenBSD cu(1) variant, for Linux at least the device name will be 
different. I'm not sure that cu(1) will handle 38400, and I'm not going to 
test it right now;). But as Nick Hibma pointed out, there's more than even 
these two ways to do it. Just keep trying..
