USB currently works just fine on FreeBSD for most any purpose,
including an external disk enclosure. However, it's too slow to be
very useful for anything. I'm quite curious to see how well the USB2
port on the 5501 performs. I've got a dual disk external drive
enclosure with two SATA disks and firewire 400, 800, and USB 2.0
ports on it.
It's designed for 24x7 operation, so it's got fans in each hot-swap
drive tray as well as a fan for the unit. Which means it's loud. I'd
love to stick it in the closet with my Soekris but the USB port is
far too slow. I also tried sharing it via Airdisk with Apple's new
Airport 802.11n base station (and USB 2.0) which runs NetBSD. I found
that too to be quite slow: http://www.tnpi.net/wiki/
Aiport_Extreme_802.11n
So for now it sits on my desk, connected via FireWire 800 which
performs very well. But when the 5501 arrives, you can be sure I'll
be attaching it again to see how well that works.
