If its of use to anybody, here is our benchmarking on FreeBSD.

Please note that original FreeBSD 4.7 tests were done with packet
size 1000, we always use packet size 64 now since I've heard its more
'average' for internet traffic and we've done testing on various
Cisco 72xx equipment with size 64 for comparisons.

Also, this, this link is handy, but on much faster hardware...

SK4501 Performance on 100Mbit ethernet ports, FBSD 4.7 circa 2003

KAME IPsec, no crypto card
2.09 Mbps
FAST_IPSEC, no crypto card
2.13 Mbps
FAST_IPSEC, hifn crypto card (vpn1211)
7.80 Mbps

FreeBSD 4.7
39.6 Mbps / 28.5 Mbps
FreeBSD 4.7+DEVICE_POLLING
52.1 Mbps / 39.4 Mbps
FreeBSD 4.7+DEVICE_POLLING+fastforwarding
64.3 Mbps

Soekris Boxes - FreeBSD 5.4 and 6.2, fall 2006
Giving a blunt description of the performance losses in FreeBSD from
4.x to 5/6.x...

Soekris 4511 and 4801 testing, 64 byte packets

Soekris 4801, 6.2 = 29Meg with polling

Soekris 4801, 6.2 = 34Meg without polling (command line bad)

Soekris 4801, 5.4 = 20Meg

Soekris 4511, 6.2 = 14Meg

Soekris 4511, 5.4 = 9Meg

Note the 4511 is slower than 4501 above, but this still shows how
crappy it is on 5.x/6.x.
