[Soekris] Interface lockups on 4801

On our latest batch of 4801s we have been experiencing network interface
lockups, that are remedied by rebooting or running ip link set ethX down
&& ip link set ethX up"  we are running an older version of wisp-dist w/
2.4 kernel (leaf.sourceforge.net) on these boxes and also have it
running on many other Soekris 4801s, 4511s, and 4521s.  

I am a little lost on what else to troubleshoot on these. I am not
seeing anything in the logs. 

They are running max 5 mb/s through the interface although, it does not
seem to match high bandwidth usage. 

Any suggestions on what else to check?

what has changed on new versions (last 6 months) of 4801s?
