It is however presumably not a problem to downgrade a board's BIOS to a 
version greater than or equal to the one used in manufacturing, right?

In other words, when the OP said that he wanted to "downgrade my 
firmware _back_ to 1.28" (emphasis mine), that should not be a problem?
