[Soekris] 5501 drives

the site sez "The ATA mounting kit should be ready in few days, the SATA
kit is a little more complicated and should come in August."  and i have
both on order and have no problem being patient.

but what worries me is that,
  o i take a sata drive that works fine on my laptop
  o use same power and sata cable to hook it too 5501
  o and nothing exciting happens

how do i triage if it is
  o cables
  o the drive is incompatible
  o bios or hardware issues
  o ...
