I don't know if you can boot from CDROM, because this is a custom
special-purpose board, not a small PC, so the BIOS may or may not have
the support code for that.

If your needs are modest, e.g. a classic embedded application such as a
firewall, then I'd buy a small CF card and just use that:  find or build
a suitable image on a PC or a Mac, then write the image to the CF card
from there.

There are some ready-made Soekris CF images for certain applications,
e.g. the PfSense firewall at http://www.pfsense.com , and the Asterisk
PBX at http://www.astlinux.org . I did find a site with lots of
general-purpose CF images on it, but I've lost the URL now  ;-)

Some excellent HOWTO information site (covering Soekris booting,
building embedded images etc) can be found here:

Just be patient as the site seems to be running a little slowly at the
moment.
