if you want to do a bit of tinkering, i am normally
using some cheap 5/8/16 port switches (Edimax, but many brands use the same hw)
based in the realtek chipset. (rtl8309 and the like, see on www.realtek.com.tw)

They cost close to nothing, take 12v supply (0.5A for the 8 port
version, 1A for the 16 port), but they
really have an internal switching regulator with 50v capacitors
(which makes me think they are designed for Power on Ethernet-like).
So you can stack the switch and the soekris one on top of the other,
and use the same power supply for both.
