[Soekris] SuSE 10.2 GRUB/boot problems

Okay, so I installed  OpenSuSE 10.2 on a hard drive and put it into my 4801.  
I changed the boot parameters so both GRUB and Linux should expect to use the 
serial port.
My system recognizes the hard drive and I get the "GRUB Loading stage2.." 
message before starting the menu, which comes up garbled.  Because the "GRUB 
loading" message comes up, I'm pretty sure I have the serial port set up 
right.
After GRUB times out it clears the screen and just hangs.  I guess I'd like to 
try to fix the GRUB problem first :).
Any hints as to why the GRUB menu is screwed up?
