[Soekris] net4801 + BIOS 1.28 + disk = no go?

Hi,

I've recently bought myself a net4801-60 without a CF card but with a
Seagate Momentus ST94813A 40GB disk. I attempted to install OpenBSD 4.0
on it but to no avail due to disk CRC errors.

The OpenBSD FAQ(*) explained that this is caused by a faulty cable, a
broken disk or unreliable hardware. I've replaced the cable and tested
the disk but the CRC errors persisted. That leaves the hardware...

I don't believe that the net4801-60 hardware in itself is to blame. Too
may are successfully using a net4801-60 with success. I've also
successfully installed OpenBSD on the very same box with a CF card
instead of a "real" disk.

The likely culprit is therefore the BIOS. My question is therefore: Has
anyone installed OpenBSD on a net4801-60 with a hard drive but without a
CF *and* BIOS version 1.28?

If yes, what kind of a hard drive?

Thanks,
  jules
