Thank you very much for responding, the first step is to reproduce :-)

My failing disk is a Hitachi 5400 rpm 60GB P/N 13G1583 which
is recognized as:
Pri Sla  HTS541060G9AT00                 LBA Xlt 1024-255-63  58605

I bought a batch of these and have used them in 4801 for some time.

They are jumpered as cable-select, if that matters

I will be happy to send you a disk, if you have trouble getting one.
