You catch the next error; there were no devices at all in /proc/net/dev.
I crossbuild a new kernel 2.6.22.3 from kernel.org source
 and the devices in /proc/net/dev appeared. Bingo, in fact
 the first eth was eth3. All worked simply using eth3 in 
 interfaces file.

I want to try your solution, but the file you suggest to remove
 is a procedure. is this really OK?
