The NICs themselves are definitely being seen...

Was the install performed on another host system? Does it get to a
login: prompt on serial console? If so, run 'cat /proc/net/dev' and see
what the interface names are. If they've all been shifted up one (e.g.,
eth[1234]), then you may need to remove
/etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules; you might also remove
/etc/udev/rules.d/z45_persistent-net-generator.rules, to prevent the
ifname locking from being done. If you're running Debian etch, this is
almost certainly your culprit.
