Chances are you missed putting/uncommenting a line like this in your
inittab:

T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100

That should attach a login prompt to the first serial port, where
your console resides. See the manpages for getty(8) and inittab(5)
if adjusting the parameters is non-obvious to you.
