That's not needed, really. My 5501 works perfectly w.r.t. ethernet under
linux.

Bent, I use VIA_RHINE and it works for me. I rather suspect a problem
with a) kernel version or b) root NFS setup. And your kernel seems
compiled with rather too many options (powernow_k8? smp? etc.).

Can you post more details on your setup?
