[Soekris] Flash & harddrive /

Maybe a trivial question .... can I have a flash and a hard drive in a 5501,
both with a boot  record and choose to boot from the HD and use the flash
only in emergency. They are both plugged in. 

I set the HD as slave and set the bios in the 5501 to flash=secondary & boot
device = 81 80 f0 ff

It keeps on booting from the flash only though ..... when I remove the flash
and set the HD as master I have no issue. 

any hints?
