I have seen those too, but just to warn innocent people reading the archives:
many modern USB modems are controllerless and no less painful than
winmodems in general. The one I have has an external serial port with
the USB port just being a USB serial converter, so ones with a serial
port should be fine... but then you could just use a serial cable,
except that using USB eliminates one power supply.
