[Soekris] Debian on Soekris GRUB Error 16...

There must some sort of morphic field thing going on.
After setting up a whole bunch of net4801 boxes using Kingston CF cards
and GRUB without a problem, the next batch now gives me GRUB error 16. 
Running fsck on the CF card didn't fix it, nor did reinstalling GRUB.
The error occurs as it loads stage 1.5 so I can't drop into the GRUB
command line.
It may be just this batch of Kingston CF cards - the last batch was
fine. So I'll try SanDisk and see if that helps.
