Probably "Programmable Interval Timer;" see

That's all the original PC/XT (and 386 and 486?) had, so in theory I 
suppose it could be just fine.  Perhaps depends on what its clock source 
is on the sc1100/4801 and whether the kernel guesses the frequency 
of that clock correctly.
