What does /dev/ look like? There need to be some devices in there to
tide it over till
devfs gets mounted. I find that you should have at least the following in /dev:

console
tty0
hda
hda1
null

Also check out http://pyramid.metrix.net, even if you dont use our
distro being able view the layout and files in the SVN repository
might help too.
