Hi, Jeff.

Can you provide a detailed step-by-step description of the way you
are connecting your PC to the net4501?  A device connected to a serial
port on a desktop/laptop will not be shown in the output of dmesg, but
you can expect a line identifying the serial port itself.  For example:

  ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

I would suggest using cu/tip to establish a connection to that device.
