[Soekris] HD suggestion

Wholeheartedly agreed.  If you want reliability above all, a Soekris is 
a good choice.  To maximize its lifetime, design your system to work 
well with compact flash.  CF cards only wear out on writes.  You can run 
one read-only damn near forever.  10+ years would be an entirely 
reasonable expectation.   You'd probably prefer OpenBSD to Linux for 
this application... it doesn't have as many features, but it's 
exceedingly stable.  Linux is in near-constant flux, with a continuous 
stream of security fixes.  Each time you have to patch, that's wear on 
the CF.

The only reason to use a hard drive is if you expect to do a great deal 
of writing, say with log files or the like.  You might prefer sticking 
with CF and using a networked syslog server, instead.
