[Soekris] Problems communicating with my Soekris 4521

I'm having problems booting my Soekris 4521, and/or communicating with it.
I've installed a few images onto my CF card, then tried to boot it up and
use hyperterminal to see what's happening. (19200, 8-1-n) Both green and red
LEDs light up on the Soekris, and the red one goes off after approx 5-10
seconds. But I don't see anything on the terminal-not a single character.
I've tried several different images, and I know that the cable isn't faulty.

With that as background, I'll ask a potentially very dumb question: what
kind of cable do I use to hook up my PC to the soekris? I'm currently using
a 9 pin serial cable that's male-female. Since both of my connections appear
to require a female connector, I've attached a gender changer to one end.

Can I/should I use something different? Any other reasons this might be
happening?

Thanks in advance!
Tim
