There is an interesting comparison of linux and the bsd's with respect
to pppoe transfer capacity, to be found here:

Note, that these tests were performed with a "clearly overpowered
server" - Athlon XP 1600+ with 512MB of DDR RAM. For a soekris, hardware
may be the actual bottleneck in any case.
