This may be off by a long way, but what BIOS version are you running?

I experienced  some rare read  timeouts on  a 4501 running  FreeBSD 4.11
some time ago.  Recently, I reloaded the  unit with a 256  MB Sandisk CF
and it wouldn't boot at all. Since it was a fairly old box, the BIOS was
quite old  too, so  I upgraded to  1.28 and haven't  seen any  CF issues
since...
