I agree with Chris: WAN port on a consumer device would probably
expect to plug into a switch, in which case you'll need a crossover
cable (swap the orange and green pairs).

I often find it useful to have a crossover adapter with me to
check before I remake cable ends, I use a RJ45-RJ45 coupler and
a short crossover cable (just a couple of cm).
