[Soekris] scx200_acb : probe failed

Hi,
   I'm trying to load scx200_acb as a module on pebble linux 2.4.31
but get probe errors such as:
Aug  2 14:20:58 3140H kernel: scx200_acb: ACBCTL2 readback failed
Aug  2 14:20:58 3140H kernel: scx200_acb: SCx200 ACB0, probe failed

I've tried the various methods shown on other sites such as setting
the base=0x820,0 or base=0x820,0x840, base=0x810,820 etc. None of
these seem to work. I'm running pebble linux on a net4826. Are there
other dependentcies that I need to know about? Anybody else
experienced this problem? As a side note, I have no choice but to use
a 2.4 kernel as this is not my call. Thank  you
