[Soekris] Read-Only Linux for 4801

Hi, I'm putting together an appliance using a net4801
to remotely run IXIA Chariot and Iperf as an endpoint
at a customer location to measure the performance of a
Point-to-Multipoint radio link. I'm hoping to solicit
suggestions for a suitable version of Linux. I'm
shying away from BSD since I have a short time to
complete the project and I know very little about BSD.
Requirements: I don't need any WiFi capabilities, DNS
or DHCP servers running, but I do need a Linux with a
read-only fs so if the customer yanks the power cord
or power-failures occur I won't have a corrupt
filesystem. I've loaded Debian using netinstall and
it works well but I don't think it will hold-up in the
long term since the fs is rw.
I also loaded Pebble and removed all the servers I
didn't need. Problem with Pebble is it hasn't been
maintained and it's been a nightmare trying to uprade
it with apt-get so I can compile my app from a
tarball. It's important that I have up-to-date
security patches, libs and c compiler.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer!
Scott
