from "man ata"	=> /boot/device.hints
...
     The following tunables are settable from the loader:

     hw.ata.ata_dma
     set to 1 for DMA access, 0 for PIO (default is DMA).
...

you can also set this interactively in the loader, for instance when
running an install-session. Write to /boot/device.hints to make it
permanent.
