[Soekris] 4801 probs: CF / HD - help please!

I've run out of things to try for the following problem. I don't know if I
have a bad 4801 board, or if CF / BIOS / HD interactions are just plain
flaky.

I want to boot from CF and access a harddisk as the secondary drive. This
works for some CF cards, but not others. All the CF cards are recognised and
boot just fine, but the hard disk does not show up as a secondary hard disk
for some. Using the "right" CF makes the  HD appear as a secondary as
expected (and I can switch back and forth with set flash=primary/secondary
as expected).

I've added a beefier PS (9V @ 3.3A) in case that was a problem and that did
resolve a POST problem I was having with one disk. I've also upgrade the
bios from 1.24 to 1.26 which made no difference (hint: I needed 'download -'
and XMODEM checksum not CRC for this to work - thank goodness for this
list's archives).

Any other ideas?  I really need to keep using the CF I already have that
works (it has  MikroTik OS licensed to that CF on it),  but I also need it
to find the hard disk as a secondary drive (not primary, which does work).

Or maybe my 4801 board is faulty?  Help please!
