[Soekris] secondary HD+CF (Sandisk vs PQI CF, bigger PS?)

I've been struggling to get my first 4801 to recognise its hard disk as the
secondary drive. Reading through the posts, it appears that others have had
similar (and also exactly opposite) issues. I welcome any insights from the
more experienced 4801 folks out there.

First, the partial solution: If I use SanDisk flash, the problem goes away
for one hard disk, but not the other. It doesn't work with the Samsung
(EFilm label) or PQI flash (all 64MB) with either hard disk.

The HD are both 20GB:
+ Hitachi Travelstar - HTS548020M9AT00
+ Fujitsu MHT2020AT (won't POST first powerup)

Details:
+ put the hard disk jumper to cable sense (or device1, not device0)
+ plug in HD - Hitachi Travelstar - HTS548020M9AT00
+ no CF
-> Pri Sla  HD

+ set flash=secondary
-> Pri Mas HD

+ add CF (either Samsung or PQI)
-> Pri Mas HD
-> Pri Sla CF

+ set flash=primary
-> Pri Mas  CF
-> (no HD)

I.e., I can have the HD as master, but never as slave if the CF is present.

If I do the same steps with the SanDisk CF, it works as expected, i.e.:

+ set flash=primary
-> Pri Mas  CF
-> Pri Sla HD

+ set flash=secondary
-> Pri Mas HD
-> Pri Sla CF

Note that this is all with the Hitachi. If I use the Fujitsu, it behaves
incorrectly with either CF. The Fujitsu is also the drive that requires two
powerups before the 4801 will POST - so I'll wait until I try a bigger PS
before I draw more conclusions on that.

Any advice or conclusions? Is it likely this all a powersupply issue?

thx! michael
