Duh. Thanks Jim! The drive had no jumpers at all, so it ended up as master.
Making it slave (Device 1 instead of Device 0 according to the disk drive
label), fixed everything. I don't think of CF as hard disks...

(Now if I could just find a spare jumper... tricky little things that hide
in dark corners of toolboxes...).
