[Soekris] compact flash ?

I'm new to the soekris board having just bought one. I am planning to install
linux on it someting like soentoo or some stripped down debian distro. I just
wanted to know how do I install this onto the compact flash card. Can i
attach the card on the board and then do this over the network or so i need
to get a CF-to-IDE converter and then mount the CF card as a normal hardisk
on my desktop and then install onto that. ? 

Also which do all compact flash cards work with the soekris board or is there
a specific version or something. ?

Does anyone have any exterience with a pcmcia compact flash adapter for the
a laptop and linux I mean do they work with linux ?

Any other tips and pointer to a newbie would will be appreciated :)
