Heh.  I've occasionally threatened to port Unix Version 7 (1979 PDP-11
Unix) to the x86.  V7 is approximately the common ancestor of all today's
Unix-like systems, so it has essentially the common core of their
functionality; the one significant thing that would need adding would be
networking.  The V7 distribution -- binaries, sources, manual pages,
documentation sources, *everything* -- was 11MB.  Uncompressed.  It ran
well on a 0.25MB machine with a CPU comparable to that of a PC-AT. 

Of course, that box wouldn't run Emacs.  Some would consider this a 
feature. :-)
