This would not be the first time that it's been necessary to go back to an
earlier Linux for a working driver for something.  I had similar problems
with Intel's dual-Ethernet cards for a while a few years ago -- the
updated drivers may have been better for Intel cards in general, but
something about either the dual card or the machine I was running it on
broke the driver for a while.
