Why the 4801 instead of the 452x?

Assuming you want to boot something other than RedBoot (or eCos) on the 
board, you would need to implement a 'fake' BIOS layer.  Even linux
talks to the bios a bit early in the boot process.

And why RedBoot instead of, say, u-boot (which appears to already have 
the fake-BIOS work done)?

Both, but I have a feeling this would end up being somewhat 
'specialized' and would require
a small amount of "assist" from Soren.
