[Soekris] FreeBSD and CompactFlash

Hi list.

I am trying to build a Compact Flash disk for my Soekris 4801 and I am
having trouble with FreeBSD.

   1. If I use a USB CF Reader ( SIIG ), it will hang the system or
      do a hard restart.  One time it took the root file system with
      it and I had to reinstall the OS.

   2. If I use an OmniFlash IDE CF device, the system will not recognize it.

My hardware is an old 200mhz Dell desktop running 4.9 FreeBSD.

Has anyone had any success with FreeBSD and a CF?
